It was the year ***3 when we decided
to occupy ourselves professionally
with organic farming, and in
particular, with the cultivation of aloe vera in
Greece.
Choosing a location was only the
first step, while our criteria were many and
versatile. Few of them were the
existence of adequate land, an ideal climate,
a right orientation, the existence of
irrigation, the quality of the soil etc.
We finally chose Komos, which is near
Pitsidia and Matala, in Southern
Crete where we enclosed an area of
*5,**0 square meters. This piece of
land was free of pesticides and other
chemicals that may affect the
outcomes of our organic cultivation,
something that was clearly shown by the
results of several soil studies that
were performed. The sandy land has
efficient drainage, an essential
prerequisite for the cultivation of aloe vera.
However, this fact itself requires
careful handling, and we are still on the
process of learning several things
about it.
The choice of the plants was the
second step, we ordered *3,**0 certified
Aloe Vera Barbadensis Miller plants,
from South America, a choice that now
seems to have been the best
alternative.
Two years later and still waiting for
our plants to grow, we are currently
seeking for markets in Greece and
especially abroad. We are still actively
searching for the essential
prerequisites for the construction of a unit of
elaboration of aloe vera in Crete. We
believe that this is very important for
the promotion of our product. This is
something that was part of our plans
from the very beginning. Albeit, this
last step is the rougher of all, but we
remain optimistic and always eager to
discuss with anyone that is interested.
