Kanchanaburi has long been known as one of the world's renowned source of blue sapphire deposits. Situated in the mid valley, some **5 kilometers (**0 miles) north-west of central Bangkok, Thailand, the town of Bo Ploi, Kanchanaburi, is known for the locality for producing Kanchanaburi blue sapphire for the past four decades. Naturally, Kanchanaburi blue sapphire deposits occur in colluvial deposits that was thought to be old ancient river bed.The gem bearing gravel found some *5 meters below ground level holds significant amount of minable blue sapphire rough gemstones. It is estimated that the proven resource of blue sapphires is running toward depletion. Rattanachart Mining, however, still owns its active mining license that represents a significant portion of known and proven blue sapphire deposit in Bo Ploi area. Kanchanaburi blue sapphire is mined open pit. The mining method is relatively simple, yet practical, and the production of blue sapphires is predicted to yield steadily.
