Ammonium bicarbonate is an inorganic compound with formula (NH4)HCO3. The compound has many names, reflecting its long history. Chemically speaking, it is the bicarbonate salt of ammonium. It is a colourless solid that degrades readily to carbon dioxide and ammonia.

DESCRIPTION:
 Ammonium Bicarbonate occurs as white crystals or as a crystalline powder. It volatilizes rapidly at *0°, dissociating into ammonia, carbon dioxide, and water, but it is quite stable at room temperature. One gram dissolves in about 6mL of water. It is insoluble in alcohol.

Function: Alkali; leavening agent.
INSPECTION STANDARD:
 Assay:  Not less than *9.0% and not more than **0.5% of NH4HCO3.
Chloride:Not more than 0.**3%.
Lead: Not more than 3 mg/kg.
Nonvolatile Residue:Not more than 0.*5% (0.*5% for products containing a suitable anticaking agent).
Sulfur:Compounds (as SO4) Not more than 0.**7%.
Solubility:Freely soluble in water, insoluble in ethanol
Heat test:When heated, it volatilizes without charring and the vapour is alkaline to moist litmus.
