The Matau, or Hook, is believed to provide protection for those in near or travelling over the water. It is a symbol of strength, understanding and leadership. In Hawaiian culture, the Hook was an implement the God Maui used to fish up the Hawaiian Islands themselves from the bottom of the sea. These are hand carved, new pendants. Over time, bone absorbs oils from the wearer and discolors in various patterns. The Matau is said to carry the spirit from wearer to wearer and was often passed down through generations as heirlooms of ancestry.
