Methods of growing crystals
Classification of methods for growing crystals is based on the phase state, content of raw materials, process conditions. Depending on these factors there are the following groups of methods of cultivation:
Crystal growth from the gas phase at the pressure gradient;
Growing crystals from solutions with concentration gradient at the crystal-solution;
Growing crystals from the melt at a temperature gradient;
Growing crystals in the solid phase
Sapphire can be grown in all phases: gas, liquid and solid.
 
The most promising methods have been the growing methods from the melt, allowing to obtain crystals of large sizes at relatively high growth rates.
 
Note that the crystallization from the melt is a complex multifactorial process: the phase transition of liquid-solid body is accompanied by structural changes, at the same time the properties of the melt change too: the viscosity, density, conductivity, etc.
