Fluorite is a colorful mineral in the visible and ultraviolet light, and has a decorative stone and lapidary use. Industrial fluorite is used as a flux for the smelting, and in the manufacture of certain glasses and enamels. The purest grade fluorspar is a source of fluoride for the production of hydrofluoric acid, which is the source of most of fluorinated intermediates of fine chemicals. Optically clear transparent fluorite lenses have low dispersion lenses because of it show less chromatic aberration, which makes them valuable in microscopes and telescopes. Fluorite optics are also used in the far ultraviolet range where conventional glasses are too absorbent for use.
