Fresh onions are available all year round. They come in Red and light Golden colors. Red color is available only in the summers while the golden variety is available throughout the year. Onions come in different sizes and as per the demand we receive we cater and accommodate various sizes and quantities in the shortest possible time.

There are two commercially grown varieties i.e. Pulkara and Red Sindh. In Baluchistan, Sariab Red is also commercially grown. The agro-ecological diversity obtained in the country enables production of onions almost around the year. However, production volumes greatly differ from crop to crop as follows:

• June-July Punjab & NWFP Plains (*3%)

• August-September  NWFP Uplands (*6%)

• August-October  Balochistan (*6%) 

• November-May  Sindh (*5%)

How to Consume Onions

People sometimes buy onions that are not well shaped and as a result the taste is compromised. Choose onions that are well shaped before buying them. They should be dry and crisp outer skins. Avoid those which are already sprouting or have signs of decay, wilting or discolored tops.

Onions can be kept at room temperature but keep them in a well ventilated area, away from bright light to prevent roots from growing.  Try not putting onions with potatoes as they will absorb the moisture and ethylene gas from potatoes and rot faster.

Did you know some people wear goggles while cutting onions. To prevent tears when cutting onions, chill the onions for about an hour before peeling, or peel them in a tub of water.  It is the sulfur compound that is released in the air that irritates the eyes. Sliced onions are to be stored in an air-tight condition to prevent oxidization.

Some health benefits

Onion is a powerful anti-septic that contains large quantities of vitamins A, B and C.  It is a strong source of folic acid, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, chromium, iron and dietary fiber. Onions are a useful herb for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, especially since it reduces the risk of blood clots. Onions also helps fight against stomach and other cancers, as well as protecting against certain infections. Onions can improve lung function, especially in asthmatics.
