Neon Signs: Neon lighting is understood through the concepts of quantum mechanics. The atoms of neon gas inside the tube are bombarded by energetic electrons, produced by running an electric current through the gas in the tube at high voltage. The electron-atom collisions excite electrons in the neon atom to higher energy levels, from which they fall back down. As they do so, they emit light at certain colors characteristic of the gas in the tube.
