Dutch SME has designed and built an automated mattress recycling plant in partnership with specialized suppliers. The concept has proven to be successful on the Dutch market and the company is receiving a lot of interest from organisations in foreign countries. To make this concept of automated mattress recycling available to other countries, the company is looking for partners in Germany, Italy, Scandinavia, the UK and the Baltic states for joint venture, licensing or sale of the concept.

A Dutch entrepreneur, owner of a recycling consultancy firm,with *0 years of experience in the recycling sector started this mattress recycling plant, together with his business partner, in ***9.
In the Netherlands used mattresses are collected by municipalities, retailers and hotels and leisure parks. Organisations can chose to bring the mattresses to the plant or to have the mattresses collected by one of three logistical companies hired by the recycling plant. It is important that the mattresses stay dry because a wet mattress cannot be recycled. This is why the company uses closed containers for collection. After a container is emptied in the plant the mattresses are automatically placed on the conveyer belt after which they are cut open.
•The predominantly cotton cover is removed and stored separately, to be given a new life as a duster or used in new textile products.
•The foam part of the mattress are reduced in size and pressed into separate bales. The foam, polyurethane foam and latex, are used in carpet underlay, judo mats, filling in the car industry, etc.
The plant has been operating successfully in the Netherlands for 3 years. The company has used this experience for fine-tuning both the machinery and collection process. This experience also provided a lot of data on which CO2 savings calculations can be provided. The company is open to share this data with future partners for business case calculations.
