Role of Shell Grit in Poultry Industry :
The awareness among people of today about the negative effects of
consumption of red meat on the health of the individual such as
Colon Cancer, High Cholesterol levels etc., has increased the
demand for more chicken meat. With the fast paced life in cities
people are more dependent on the fast foods and ready to eat foods.
Hence the demand for chicken production has increased
exponentially. To meet the high demand the poultry industry needs
to grow live birds in larger numbers.
To increase Poultry live birds production, Sea shell grit plays
major role to live birds as a source of calcium and digestion as
mentioned below. 1. Digestion: In order to digest their food
accurately, chickens require fine (insoluble or 'flint') shell
grit. Since chicken don't have teeth they use this shell grit to
grind the food consumed. (An illustration of the digestive system
of a chicken shows the path food takes. Inside the proventriculus,
food is mixed with acids and digestive enzymes. Grit accumulates in
the gizzard, which with a strong muscular action, grinds the food
down. So to digest their food correctly, chicken need insoluble
grit.) 2. Calcium: Shell grit is digested by the bird and contains
calcium, most of which is used to form strong egg shells. The
majority of an egg shell is made up of calcium carbonate which is
generated through shell grit. A constant supply of shell grit
ensures sufficient supply of calcium in their bodies. Deficiency of
calcium results in soft or poor quality egg shells which ultimately
affect hatching.
