Silybin is sparingly soluble in aqueous buffers. For maximum solubility in aqueous buffers, silybin should first be dissolved in DMF and then diluted with the aqueous buffer of choice. Silybin has a solubility of approximately 0.5 mg/ml in a 1:9 solution of DMF:PBS (pH 7.2) using this method. We do not recommend storing the aqueous solution for more than one day. |

Range of application |
1. Silybin is the major flavonolignan from the extracts of milk thistle seed, S. marianum. The whole extract, known as silymarin, has been found to protect the liver from both acute and chronic toxicity and injury. 2. Silybin blocks the production of superoxide in PMA-activated rat Kupffer cells with an EC value of around **0 µM. 3. Silybin also blocks the synthesis of leukotriene B by these same cells with an IC*0 value of about *5 µM. 4. Thus, part of the protective effects of silybin could be due to *-lipoxygenase inhibition. |
