Bitter Kola (Garcinia Kola) is one of the two varieties of  nuts from kola trees found in the  tropical rain forest of west Africa. It is flowering plant found in western Africa with pale yellow nut-like seeds with brown pericarp . It has been used in African culture for centuries for both traditional and medicinal purposes. It contains dimeric flavonoid, lipase inhibitor which is believed to have many healing benefits.


Kola is usually in two varieties namely bitter kola and kola nuts. It is found in Nigeria, Benin, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Ghana, Liberia, Senegal and Sierra Leone. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical rain forests.Though the focus  is on bitter kola, It is important to note that the kola nuts variety can be further sub-divided into Gworo and Igbo Oji in Nigeria. While gworo is mostly consumed in the Northern part of  Nigeria,  Igbo oji is mostly consumed in the Eastern part of the country and they play a very significant role in the custom and tradition of the people of the Eastern region.
 
Kola trees are natives of central and West Africa and are distinguished primarily by the medicinal and stimulant properties of their nuts, barks and leaves.
 
Bitter {Garcinia} Kolais one of the varieties of kola that can be found in the Nigeria which are mostly found in the southern parts of the country and some of their uses are stated below.
