Scientific name: Actaea racemosa L

Botanical Synonyms: Cimicifuga racemosa (L.) Nutt. Macrotys Actaeoides; Botrophis Serpentaria Raf.; B. actaeeoides Fisch. & C.A. Mey.; Thalictrodes racemosa (Kl. Kuntze).

Family: Ranunculaceae. Latin name:Cimicifuga racemosa.

Black cohosh has effects similar to the female hormone estrogen. Its used to relieve premenstrual cramps, painful periods and menopausal disorders, such as hot flashes, anxiety and depression. Gynecological uses:Black cohosh has long been used by Native Americans for female problems, for which reason it was also known as "squawroot." Black cohosh is used today for menstrual pain and problems where progesterone production is too high, and for menopausal symptoms, especially hot flashes, debility, and depression.
