Chinese South Pearl (sea water pearl) are found in Beibu Gulf and southeastern coastal area in China. Historically, Pearls found in Hepu County of Guangxi Province are known as South Pearls and reputed as the best. In addition to South Pearl, there are two other kinds famous in the world: West Pearl from Europe and East Pearl from Japan. For the three major kinds of pearls, there is a popular saying that "East is better than West; South is better than both ".
Round pearls, which are found more in sea pearls than in freshwater pearls, are viewed as the best in shape and had a name of " Rolling Pearls " in ancient times. They roll automatically when put in a container. South Pearl from Hepu is just of such rolling kind with its perfect round shape, casting satiny glow from within.
Most of sea pearls are white and light yellow in color; the others are reddish, green, purple, brown, black and so on. 85% of sea pearls measure 4.5 mm-7.5 mm in diameter. For those reach 8 mm or more, they are the rare. Prices of superior or rare pearls will be set by gram since such pearls are rated much more valuable than gold.
