Properties MASTER1600 is an acrylate-based emulsion copolymer supplied at 30% active solids in water. The process employed in the manufacture of MASTER1600 allows fine control of the polymer structure and molecular weight to meet the specific rheology and water retention requirements of the paper and paperboard coating industries. Control of these properties can have a positive effect on runnability and surface properties.
The following advantages are obtained:
Newtonian flow characteristics
Effective viscosity build in little alkali
Liquid for ease of handling and metering
Effective viscosity build in high solids systems
Provides excellent water retention
Shear tolerance
Application MASTER1600 should be diluted with the appropriate amount of water prior to addition of an alkali. The normal maximum concentration of MASTER1600 that can be easily handled is 0.6% in the aqueous system. Addition of an handled is 0.6% in the aqueous system. Addition of an alkali to original MASTER1600 will form an unworkable gel. When a alkali is mixed with diluted MASTER1600 solution, agitation should be adequate to disperse the material uniformly, however, excess agitation should be avoided to prevent foaming.

Little of following normal commercial alkaline can be used with MASTER1600 with satisfactory result:
Sodium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, monoethanolamine, diethanolamine.
Addition of excess alkaline(Ph>9) would cause solution viscosity drop down. The efficiency of MASTER1600 can be seen in following graph.
