Description

As you are aware that the lightning and switches surges / spikes are hazardous to any electrical installation. These surges may enter any network either from lightning surges or from switching surges.
Although lightning surges are less susceptible in urban areas but still it affects to a great extent during the rainy season. It is because of the fact that during rainy season or the formation of clouds, the sky above produces some charges, and with the tendency of earth producing opposite charges as of the clouds or sky, these charges rises up and may couple any earthing and the power supply network. If this electromagnetic coupling happens then for a fraction of second or in microseconds this surge will pass through all the equipments installed (which always happens frequently). This surge may sometimes damage the equipment instantly or may reduce the life of electronic components of the equipments. As a result all the costly electronic equipments may destroy either instantly or slowly.

Sometimes, this upward movement of earth charges and downward movement of clouds charges meet each other which results in thunder or lightning. This lightning travels at a very high speed and carries about 100KA-400KA of current, which can destroy any structure in case of direct or indirect strikes. Indirect strikes are possible if lightning hits our power supply network or in case it couples through our existing earth. Direct strikes are harmful to the entire building itself which may also couple with water supply concealed pipes, gas pipes, electric wires, etc. and can also totally burn the building.

Also, surges do enter our installations during switching on and off of sub-station, transformers, on and off of air conditioning units, motors, pumps, welding machines, etc. which are more harmful than lightning surges because these are more common and comes many times daily. These switching surges slowly or instantly destroys our power supply equipment of communication system or even communication equipment, computers, televisions, UPS, music systems, CNC machines, electronic chokes used in tube light fittings and all the sophisticated costly and useful equipments used in any industry, commercial as well as residential buildings. In the case of your computer, a power fluctuation can disrupt software, erase valuable data and damage the hard drive, printer, modem and other related equipment. Failure of any equipment incur not only its maintenance cost but also results in downtime of the equipment apart from time and other personal efforts used in getting it repaired or replaced. Further, these damages may also happen when the need of the equipment will more. Hence it is necessary to use surge protective devices in order to smoothen the working of all the sophisticated costly and useful equipments.

So to avoid all these failures, one has to assure safety of all the power supply equipments. For this, just install following:

1. Class C arrester of current carrying capacity 20KA to 40KA (8/20) should be installed at the entry level in parallel to the supply, xxxxx, at the main distribution board or at the LT panel.

2. For modems, routers, LAN, servers, hub- RJ11, RJ45 type surge protector should be connected in series depending upon the interface RJ11 or RJ 45 should be selected.
3. For precision equipment safety, xxxxx, for equipments operating on 24V, 48V, 110V AC/ DC- As per the voltage rating it should be selected and installed in series before the equipment.
4. Coaxial signal surge protection unit to be installed for safety of CCTV, security systems, satellite communication system, V-SAT, BP paging transmitter, microwave communication receiving and dispatch station, Global Positioning System GPS, short wave of communication station, CDMA and GSM mobile communication station and should be selected depending upon the type of interface BNC / N / TNC / L9 / CC4 / FL10 / F / UHF and transfer rate.

5. External lightning arrester for large, high-rise buildings, towers and having lot of commercial value and where external protection for safety from direct lightning strikes are necessarily required should be installed.
