Suriname, located in Northern South America, is officially known as the Republic of Suriname. It is not only the smallest nation in terms of area but it's also the least populated nation in South America. Suriname is a member of the World Trade Organization. The economy of Suriname is dominated by the mining industry. The chief mineral resources are bauxite and gold. Agriculture also contributes towards the economy of the country. The chief crop is rice. Other crops cultivated are bananas, plantains, palm kernels, coconuts and peanuts. Main industries are bauxite and gold mining, alumina production, oil, lumbering, fishing and food processing. |
