Stainless steel grade 431 is a commonly available martensitic stainless with good corrosion resistance and elevated carbon to allow for cold working to a variety of tempers.It can be obtained in the 1/16 hard,1/8 hard,1/4 hard,1/2 hard,3/4 hard and full hard .

Type 431 provides high strength and good ductility when cold worked. The grade is essentially non-magnetic when annealed. High strength and excellent corrosion resistance make Type 431 Stainless Steel useful for a wide variety of applications. Typical uses include aircraft structural parts, trailer bodies, diaphragms, architectural and automotive trim, automobile wheel covers, roof drainage products, tablewear, storm door frames and conveyor belts.

Heat Treatment

Solution Treatment(Annealing)-Heat to 1100-1150ºC and cool rapidly.

Stress Relief Annealing:Heat to 500-900ºF(260-482ºC),then air cool.

Use low side of range for intermediate annealing.

This grade cannot be hardened by thermal treatment.


Cold Working

Stainless steel grade 431 and low carbon variants of this grade are predominantly used as high strength stainless steel .The work hardening rates of these grade are very high,in the range of a 14MPa increase per 1% reduction in area of cold work .As a result of this characteristic high strength can be achieved from cold rolling and roll forming operations.

In spite of achieving such high strengths,the residual ductility in the alloy is capable of causing severe cold deformation .The alloy is non-magnetic in the annealed condition,but shows strong magnetism when cold worked.


Hardens at high rate,creating a very high strength from cold rolling and form roll forming.

More difficult to work than other martensitic stainless steels,due to its high work hardening rate.

Several cold deformation call still occur,due to residual ductility.

Grade 431 becomes strongly magnetic when cold rolled









The martensitic class of stainless steels is generally considered to be weldable by the common fusion and resistance techniques. Special consideration is required to avoid"hot cracking" by assuring formation of ferrite in the weld deposit. This particular alloy is generally considered to have similar weldability than the most common alloy of this stainless class

Must be annealed for maximum corrosion resistance

Material will lose temper in the heat affected weld zone.

Welding and post weld annealing will both remove high strength induced by prior cold rolling.

Heat Resistance

Can be exposed continuously without appreciable scaling to a max of 1600ºF(871ºC).

Maximum exposure temperature is about 1450ºF(788ºC),for intermittent exposure

Has an oxidation weight gain of 10mg/cm2 in 1,000 hours,in temperatures over 1600ºF(871ºC)



Corrosion Resistance


Type431 in the nature of high corrosion resistance.The best corrosion resistance is obtained in the cold worked then annealed condition.When Type431 is heated or cooled through a temperature range of 800-1600ºF(427-871ºC)without subsequent annealing,it may undergo carbide precipitation that may result in intergranular corrosion.



Type 431 can be readily formed and drawn.Due to its high work-hardening rate,intermediate annealing maybe necessary for severe drawing and forming operations.



DESCRIPTION: 431 is a hardenable martensitic, nickel bearing grade, which has the best corrosion resistance properties of all martensitic grades. Due to excellent tensile strengths it is particularly suited for use in pump shafts, valve stems, outboard motor drive shafts and other similar applications. Steel carried in stock is in a pre-hardened and tempered condition ready for use.

431 is a high chromium-low nickel high hardenability Martensitic stainless steel with high strength and good corrosion resistance, as generally supplied hardened and tempered in the tensile range 850 - 1000 Mpa (condition T) Brinell range 248 - 302.Characterised by very good corrosion resistance in general atmospheric corrosive environments, good resistance to mild marine and industrial atmospheres, resistant to many organic materials, nitric acid and petroleum products coupled with high tensile and high yield strength plus excellent toughness in the hardened and tempered condition.
