Australian irrigated cotton produces the world’s highest yields. Depending on the availability of irrigation in any year the total Australian crop can be anywhere from 1 million bales (**7,**0 tonnes) to 4.5 million bales (1,**2,**0 tonnes). In Australia cotton is grown in southern, central and north-western NSW and in southern Queensland. The farms are mix of family owned farms and corporate farming.

The oil yield from Australian irrigated cottonseed is one of the highest in the world. Cottonseed is usually sold on a guaranteed minimum specification of *7% oil content but actual results are normally *0% oil content or more. After allowing for removal of around 8% linter (short cotton fibres) from the seed, and *0% oil, ****0% of the seed is still remaining as meal & hulls after crushing for cottonseed oil. Cottonseed oil is the preferred choice vegetable oil in commercial frying applications. Cottonseed oil has a high smoke point, meaning it remains stable at the high temperatures required by fast-food fryers. Cottonseed oil is naturally partially hydrogenated meaning it has exceptional shelf life. Cottonseed oil has health benefits over other oils & fats being cholesterol free, low in trans fats, high in antioxidants and high in vitamin E. Cottonseed meal and hulls are a valuable source of protein for livestock feeds. Whole Australian cottonseed is usually sold on a minimum of ****8% protein but actual results are normally *0% protein or more.
