AES - Atomic Emission Spectrometry

lAtomic emission spectrometry, under the thermal excitation or electric excitation, uses each element in the atom or ion emission characteristic spectrum to determine the composition of the material, to carry on the qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis method.

lAtomic emission spectrometry is one of the original generations and makes progress in optical analysis. In modern times, it plays an important role in qualitative and quantitative analysis of various materials.

lAdvantages:

1. With simultaneous multi-element detection capability. Determine a variety of elements in one sample.

2. The rapid analysis result. If use the photoelectric direct reading spectrometer, it can quantitative analysis dozens of elements in a few minutes. Without chemical treatment, analysis sample including solid and liquid can be determined directly (arc spark method).

3. Detect the limit low. General lighting source can be up to ***0.1 mg/ml, the absolute value of **0.*1 mg. High frequency inductive coupling plasma (ICP - AES) level detection limit is of ng/ml.

4. Accuracy is higher. Common light sources error is about 5%**0%, the ICP AES is relatively below 1%.

lDisadvantages:

lAnalysis methods:

1. The qualitative analysis

Each element of the atom has its own characteristic spectrum, according to the atomic spectrum characteristic spectral line in the elements can determine whether there is the checked element in the sample. Usually we called the element characteristic spectrum intensity bigger line as the elements sensitive line. As long as spectrum sensitive line of a certain element detected in the sample, there is the element can be confirmed. On the other hand, if it wasn't detected, the checked element doesnt exist in the sample, or the content of the checked element under the detection sensitivity.

2. The semi-quantitative analysis

Qualitative spectrochemical analysis always uses spectrographic method, by comparing the sample spectrum with the pure substance spectrum or iron spectrum to determine whether the element there. It is now the most important means of spectral semi-quantitative analysis, which can quickly give roughly the content of the element under test in the sample. And the commonly methods used are the line blackness comparison method and emerge method, etc.

3. The quantitative analysis

Due to the emission spectrum analysis being affected by the fluctuation of the experimental conditions, the spectral line intensity measurement error is bigger, in order to compensate the error caused by fluctuations, usually using internal standard method for quantitative analysis. Internal standard method is to compare the relation of the analysis line and the compared lines intensity with elements content to carry on spectral quantitative analysis method. The compared line chooses called the internal standard line, to provide the marking elements, known as the internal standard element. Internal standard method was put forward by Mr. Geithner about ***5.
