Crude Oil is a naturally occurring, flammable liquid found in the rock formations in the Earth consisting of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights, plus other organic compounds. Exploration, production and exportation of crude oil provide the major source of revenue for Nigeria. Nigerian Bonny light crude oil is the best known sweet crude oil of the country and it has been processed over the years in the oil refineries of the United States of America, Europe and Asia. Despite recent development with respect to increased exploration and production of shale oil in U.S.A, it is still expected that Bonny light will continue to be a substantial percentage of the crude slates in refineries due to its lower contaminants relative to most crude oils and it is easily processed in the refinery with excellent profitability.
