Medicinal Use. Boldo bark is rich in tannin and use in tannery.  However the most appreciated products are the leaves, which are utilized in the preparation of digestive infusions or teas, in treatments for gall bladder and liver conditions. The active principle of the leaves is an alkaloid and boldine that have choleretic (an agent, usually a drug, that stimulates the liver to increase output of bile) , cholagogue (a medicinal agent which promotes the discharge of bile from the system) and diuretic effects.  They also present small concentrations of other alkaloids, specially isoboldine and lomonene. 2% of essential oils are extracted from the leaves and is very aromatic, rich in eucalyptol and ascaridol.
