Cambodia has already licensed 7 Offshore blocks and has licensed 3 onshore blocks from its *6 onshore blocks for exploration.

Several sedimentary basins ranging in age from Permian to Quaternary have been identified as a result of earlier onshore geological and geophysical surveys. In addition to this, an airborne magnetic and gravity survey conducted by the Japan National Oil Corporation (JNOC) in ***6 identified two deepest sedimentary features in the Tonlé Sap Basin, those most likely to hold hydrocarbons, lies to the north and west of the current lake rather beneath it. In the conclusion of JNOC report, geologic surface mapping, rock sampling to give a broader sample of densities for rock type, 2D seismic regional line across the grabens were recommended to be carried out in the area.

Further, in ***6 the Royal Government of Cambodia (Government) signed a two years contract with Mitsui Oil Exploration Co., Ltd. to undertake remote sensing applied to evaluate hydrocarbon potentials of the entire Tonlé Sap area.

At the same time, Sinopec from China has conducted a field trip around the Tonlé Sap Area to collect rock samples for geochemical analysis.

The Tonlé Sap Basin is the largest Quaternary basin arid at the center of the basin locates a large Tonlé Sap Lake.

The basin area is cleared of all mines and in the late ***0s; the Japan National Oil Corporation (JNOC) has conducted an airborne gravity and magnetic survey over the onshore Tonlé Sap and Mekong Basins in the Kingdom of Cambodia. The survey area covers about *4,**0 km2.

It is considered that Tonlé Sap Basin was formed by strike-sip movements associated with the Indian Plate colliding into the Asian continent during the Tertiary age in the studied area.
