GP GASIFIER
PLANT
First in our country, we have successfully developed commercial
sized GP Biomass Gasification Plant for generation of electrical
power as well as thermal energy from agro waste.
In GP system, solid biomass, a carbonaceous fuel is burnt under
controlled air and water to produce a combustible (carbon–monoxide
based) gas, generally known as producer gas. This gas is having
calorific value of ***0–***0 Kcal/nM3 which is being utilized for
generation of electrical power and/or thermal energy. However,
before this gas is used, it is important to clean and cool it as it
contains tar and other impurities.
ELECTRICAL POWER
:
GP Biomass Gasifier Plant is highly suitable as a decentralized
power station– both for captive use in the industries as well as
for rural electrification, where transmission of power through grid
line is very expensive and growth of electrical load is
minimal.
For generation of electrical power with producer gas, two types of
engines can be used :-
Dual Fuel Engine: A dual fuel engine is basically a diesel engine
with conversion kit to run the engine with diesel and any suitable
gas having certain calorific value including producer gas. This
works on the diesel cycle. Producer gas is added to the air, which
is introduced to the engine before introducing it into the
turbo-charger. This mixture of air and gas is compressed in the
cylinder just as air is compressed in normal CI engine. After
compression, the diesel is injected through a conventional fuel
system. This diesel oil ignites first as pilot fuel and the heat
released by its combustion leads to the combustion of the gas air
mixture. In the process, consumption of diesel can be reduced to
the extent of *5%**5%. Existing engine may also be retrofitted for
dual-fuel operation.
Spark Ignition Engine : The producer gas is the sole fuel
in the Spark Ignition (SI) engine. A gas carburetor or mixer
is used to prepare the air-gas mixture. The mixture is sucked into
the engine during the suction stroke, compressed and then ignited
by a spark from a spark plug in the cylinder head.
THERMAL ENERGY:
Since producer gas is combustible in nature, the same can be fired
with the help of a suitably designed burner. This is how the
boiler, furnace, oven etc. can be gas fired to replace oil, coal or
any other costly fuel. In this case, there will be no ash/fly ash
or particulate in the exhaust gas.
Again, temperature up to ****0C can be achieved by burning the
above gas. Hence, process heat for industrial applications namely,
heating of water, air, fluid etc. is obtained from producer gas at
a cheaper cost.
PROCESS TECHNOLOGY
The Gasification process technology is based on production of a
highly combustible gas by controlled reactions of Biomass viz. rice
husk, wood, palm nut shell etc. with air and water vapour.
In the Gasifier, the solid biomass fuel having moisture content not
exceeding *0% and *5mm size is fed from the top, while the air and
steam is fed from the bottom, and moves upward against the downward
movement of the biomass fuel, and this process of gas generation is
called the Updraft principle.
A number of chain chemical reactions take place in the gas
generator from the bottom to the top, a proper mixture of air &
water vapour pass through channel free compact fuel bed ensuring
the following reactions to take place.
Oxidation Zone
C + O2 = CO2 + Heat
Primary Reduction Zone
C + CO2 = 2CO ~ Heat
C + H2O = CO + H2 ~ Heat
C + 2H2O = CO2 + 2H2 ~ Heat
Secondary Reduction Zone
C + CO2 = 2CO ~ Heat
CO + H2O = CO2 + H2 ~ Heat
While the plant is under normal operation, following zones are
believed to exist in the gasifier, as shown in the cross sectional
view below:
Ash Zone : A flow of heat takes place from hot ash to the
air and water vapour entering the system and thus the hot process
air enters the oxidation zone and the cooled ash leaves the system
at the bottom to the water seal, generally maintained at about **0
mm wg.
Oxidation Zone : It is a thin zone having the highest
temperature (***0C–****0C) in the Gasifier due to the exothermic
reaction.
Primary Reduction Zone : The heat released by the
oxidation zone below is cooled down by the endothermic reactions in
this zone with the formation of CO, H2 and CO2 by the interaction
of C present in the fuel with O2 and H2O present in the process
air.
Secondary Reduction Zone : It reduces further the
temperature of the gas coming out of the zone below due to
the endothermic reactions with the production of CO by the
interaction of C with CO2 and simultaneous water gas reaction.
Distillation Zone : The heat of the up moving gas from the
secondary reduction zone helps the distillation of the volatile
matters present in the fuel with the evolution of high volatile
hydrocarbons which combine with the gas to enrich it in its
calorific value and the temperature of the gas goes down
further.
Composition of Gas : Though for different biomass fuels,
there may be little variation in gas composition as well as the
heating value, the gas composition and calorific value in general
are as follows :-
CO2 = 8 - *0%, O2 = Less than
1.0%, CO =
*4 - *6%,
CH4 = 1.5 - 2%, N2 = *4 - *6%,
H2 = *0 - *2%.
CV. (Gorss) = ***0 - ***0 Kcal/
Normal cubic meter
Sp. Gravity = 0.*2
Yield of Gas : 1.*0 - 1.*0 Normal cubic meter per kg. of
biomass.
Tar & Particulate concentration in gas :
• Below *0 mg/ Nm3 (in case of Power
generation)
• Below *0 mg/ Nm3 (in case of Thermal
application )
Specific advantages of GP
Gasifier systems are highlighted below for ready
reference:-
Continuous Operation: GP
Gasifier plant is designed for continuous operation of *4 hours a
day and at least up to **0 days at a stretch, after which a brief
shut down of *5 days is recommended for annual maintenance. The
plant may again be put to operation there after. On-line stand-by
for all mechanical items like blower, motor, pump etc. are provided
for this
purpose.
Higher Flexibility: It is a
multi-fuel system. The plant can run with any one of the biomasses
from a wide range, whichever available locally. Beside rice husk,
the same plant may also run with wood block, saw dust, wood bark,
sun flower seed husk, ground nut shell, coconut shell, corn cob
etc.
Unique Gas Cleaning System :
GP Gasifier is coupled with a unique Gas Cleaning
System to clean and cool the gas in TEN STAGES to ensure virtually
tar-free gas for the engine.
Uninterrupted Power Supply :
The modified diesel generating set, which normally runs with dual
fuel i.e. gas and diesel oil, can also run with **0% diesel oil in
the absence of gas just by changing a knob. Hence, uninterrupted
power supply is assured even when plant is shut down for any
reason.
Low Cost Power : The capital
investment as well as the cost for generation of power is very low
in comparison to any other system.
True value for investment:
Great care has been taken for ensuring safe operation and long
life. GP Gasifier Plant is designed to have a life of
at least *5 years.
Government Support : Since GP
Gasifier is approved by the Ministry of Non-conventional Energy
Sources, cash subsidy and income tax benefits are made available by
the government against GP Gasifier.
