Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is a white or light yellow fibrous or powdery solid, inodorous  and atoxic. Prepared by etherified alkali cellulose and ethylene oxide (or chlorohydrin) HEC is a kind of nonionic soluble cellulose ethers. Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) has good thickening ability to water, can be degraded by oxygen, acid and enzyme, and could be crosslinked by Cu2+ at alkaline conditions. Heat stable, it do not show gelation when heated, not precipitate under acidic conditions, HEC has good film in forming properties. The aqueous solution can be made into a transparent thin film, which can be formed by the alkaline cellulose and ethylene oxide. It has the function of thickening, emulsifying, bonding, suspending, filming, retaining moisture and protecting colloids. The role of thickeners in aqueous inks is thickening. The viscosity of ink will increase after adding HEC.
