The herb has a long religious and medicinal history, and its name can be traced back to the Greek term 'hysopos' which is itself derived from the Hebrew word 'azob' or 'ezob' meaning 'holy herb'.

It was used to cleanse both people and sacred places, with the herb eventually becoming a symbol of cleansing and purification. One reference in the Old Testament reads, 'Purge me with Hyssop and I shall be clean, wash me and I shall be whiter than snow'.

The strengthening and cleansing action of hyssop essential oil is particularly valuable when dealing with negative emotions such as grief, guilt or jealousy. It is also a useful oil to use in the springtime when the pollen count is high.

Avoid use if you are pregnant or suffer from epilepsy. Do not use on babies or children under the age of 4.
