Gowns are identified as the second-most-used piece of PPE, following gloves, in the healthcare setting. Isolation gowns are defined by Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) as the protective apparel used to protect HCWs and patients from the transfer of microorganisms and body fluids in patient isolation situations . The Food and Drug Administration also defines isolation gowns similarly: a gown intended to protect healthcare patients and personnel from the transfer of microorganisms, body fluids, and particulate material. It is also specified that the isolation gown covers the torso and clothing, and poses a physical barrier to the transfer of microorganisms and other materials.
