KEMULEX is an emulsion explosive in which a water solution of ammonium nitrate and other oxidizers is dispersed in an oil/wax mixture, which is the fuel. It is the unique structure and high ratio of oxidizer to fuel that give emulsion explosives their specific properties. The fuel phase is known as a continuous phase because it surrounds and coats all of the oxidizer droplet s giving a large contact surface to the oxidizer. The oxidizer remains dispersed in the fuel to form a stable emulsion by means of a surfactant, an emulsifier. The viscosity of the emulsion is controlled by the nature of the fuel phase. A high content of wax gives a stiffer consistency suitable for cartridge explosives while a high content of oil gives pump able or pour able explosives. Emulsion explosives are sensitized with gas filled cavities which collapse by an initiating shock wave and act as "hot spots "in which the temperature is sufficiently high to start and maintain an explosive reaction in the explosive. The cavities are in the case of KEMULEX, air filled micro balloons. KEMULEX is a known fact that the smaller the particle size of the ingredients of an explosive, the higher the velocity of detonation (VOD).Since the droplet size (0.***0 microns)of emulsions are so fine, the VOD is very high. The VOD does decrease somewhat as the charge diameter decreases or as solids such as aluminum are added, but generally remains relatively high, when compared to other civil high explosives. KEMULEX is a good choice on worksites with wet holes and for underwater blasting because it will perform successfully, even after sleeping long time in the blast holes. Because of the physical nature and properties of emulsion explosives, KEMULEX maintains its good tamping characteristics over a wide temperature range, **0 degree C to **0 degree C.
