Vertical Turbine Pumps (VTP)are commonly found in harsh environments- slurries, sea water, boiler feed, cooling tower, recirculation, dewatering, petro-chemical transfer, high pressure condensate, to name but a few.

By design, the very long shafts create substantial radial movement, so much so that pump manufacturers often design in bushings all the way down the column. These bushings are normally made of bronze, rubber, or carbon and all exhibit accelerated wear due to their material weaknesses. As they wear, the shaft moves increasingly freer and frequently wear the bushing housings themselves. This radial movement all along the shaft transmits to the stuffing box and causes both packing and mechanical seals to fail prematurely.
