1.Menthol, also known as peppermint camphor, is amonoterpene
(*0 carbons);topical pain reliever and antipureticobtained from mint 
oils (mainly peppermintor made synthetically from coal tar. It is a white 
crystalline compound with a characteristic pungent odor. An alcohol, 
menthol is freely soluble in alcohols, ether,and chloroform. It exists in 
levo or dextro isomer forms.  Menthol imparts a tingling sensation to 
the skin and used in skin fresheners like aftershave and suntan lotions.
It has a local anesthetic property for shortterm relief of minor sore throat 
and minor muscle aches. It is used in medicines and perfumes, and as a 
mint flavoring agent. End applications include toothpaste, cough drops, 
ice cream, chewing gum, shampoo, medical plaster.

2.Menthol reacts in many ways like a normal secondary alcohol. It is 
oxidised to menthoneby oxidising agents such as chromic acid, though
under some conditions the oxidation can go further and break open the
ring. Menthol is easily dehydrated to give mainly 3menthene, by the
action of 2% sulfuric acid. PCl5 gives menthyl chloride.

3.Menthol's ability to chemically trigger coldsensitive receptors in the 
skin is responsible for the wellknown cooling sensation that it provokes 
when inhaled, eaten, or applied to the skin.
