Hyaluronic acid (hereafter HA) is commonly available as its sodium salt – sodium hyaluronate. This compound widely exists in many parts of the human body, such as connective, epithelial, and neural tissues. Hence, HA is perfectly biocompatible with the human body. The compoud has powerful moisterizing and anti-wrinkle capabilities. For example, macromolecular HA can form a thin air-permeable layer on the top of the skin and keep the skin sooth and moist. This layer also protects the skin from the damage caused by bacteria, dust and UV. Micromolecular HA can penetrate deeply into dermis so as to dilate capillaries, improve blood circulation, improve skin elasticity and reduce wrinkles.

Oral intake of HA is able to increase HA content in the human body, such as skin and joint. In particular HA can increase the viscosity of the joint fluid, thereby lubricating the joint, cushioning the joint, and producing an analgesic effect. Therefore oral HA is used to treat osteoarthritis of the knee.

HA added into eye drops can prelong the time of drugs remaining on the ocular surface, improve bioavailability of drugs and relieve irritation caused by drugs to the eye and improve comfort.

Medical appliations of HA include a viscoelastic agent for ocular surgery, a filling agent for the surgeries of osteoarthiritis and rheumatoid arthritis and a filling agent in facial plastic surgery.

Coenzyme Q*0 (CoQ*0) is an oil-soluble, vitamin-like substance presented in all human cells. It is responsible for cell protection and production of the body’s energy. It is a key component involved in aerobic cellular respiration to generate energy in the form of ATP. Therefore, those organs with the highest energy requirements—such as the heart, liver and kidney—have the highest CoQ*0 concentrations.

CoQ*0 may have an effect on skin and the appearance of wrinkles, most notably by reducing UV damage, stimulating healthy collagen production, and reducing substances in damaged skin that wreck havoc on its support structure. Research also shows that topical application of CoQ*0 has anti-oxidation and anti-inflammatory effects. 

Pullulan is a polysaccharide polymer consisting of maltotriose units, which is produced from starch by the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans. It is biologically non-toxic to human and was certified as GRAS in the US.

The main commercial use of pullulan is to manufacture edible films for oral hygiene products and capsules for drugs. In the food industry the compound is used as a thickening agent and a freshness agent. Its thickening activity is thermal-stable, pH-stable and acid/alkaline-stable. It is also added into cosmetics like hair spray and facial mask. 

The aloe vera extract is available as a range of products, including gel juice, whole leaf juice, gel dried powder, whole leaf dried powder and diced gel in juice. Both decolorized and non-decolorized products are available. The aloe vera extract can be used as a thickening agent for drinks and ice creams. But it cannot be added into drinks with alcohol because precipitation may occur.

Aloe vera contains both glycoproteins and polysaccharides. Glycoproteins have healing effect and polysaccharides have soothing and moisturizing effects to skin. Therefore the aloe vera extract is often added into cosmetic products such as makeup, tissues, moisturizers, soaps, sunscreens, incense, shaving cream and shampoos. Various components of aloe (aloin, aloe-emodin, and barbaloin) are used as laxatives. 

Glabridin is a chemical compound found in the root extract of licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra). It is used in cosmetics for whitening, anti-sensitizing, anti-oxidizing and anti-inflammation due to its strong antioxidation capability, which is similar to the SODs. This compound is also used in pharmaceuticals and health care products to treat gastritis, ulcer, liver conditions, atherosclerosis and females’ osteoporosis after their climacterium.
