Ophthalmic perfluorocarbon gas is an ideal substance used as intravitreal tamponade in retinal detachment surgery and vitrectomy. It is noninflammatory, expanding by absorbing O2and N2 in blood or air. It can be absorbed by dissolving into blood and intraocular aqueous humor. Application of the gas may simplify the treatment of macular holes in retinal detachment, restrict cellular proliferation and activity of growth factors, and flat retina in vitrectomy.
