The word hydrosol is derived from the Latin hydro meaning water and sol meaning solution. Also known as hydrolates, hydrolats, floral waters and plant waters, the terms are interchangeable in the world of aromatherapy. Hydrosol used in aromatherapy is a relatively new concept. All essential oil production has hydrosols as a co-product, therefore it is safe to assume that interest in hydrosols and availability will continue to grow. What is a Hydrosol? We�re often asked and do our best to describe the process of steam distillation of essential oil, separating the oil from the water, and the resulting hydrosol by-product of producing oil. But did you know that hydrosol has as great or greater a value in aromatherapy as essential oil? WHAT IS NOT A HYDROSOL? Hydrosols are not distilled, spring or tap water with essential oils added. Nor are they water and essential oils combined with a dispersant (alcohol or glycerin) to dissolve the oils in water. Water with fragrance oil or other synthetic compounds added to it is not hydrosol, nor are the cohobated distillation waters. Hydrosol production should use certified organic material harvested in a sustainable manner and composed of one distinct identifiable botanical species only. Our organic plant material is grown, harvested, and distilled here on the farm slowly under low pressure, producing a therapeutic grade of oil and hydrosol.
