WHAT ARE CHIA SEEDS?

Small seeds – high nutritional value

Chia seeds are a unique food because they contain a whole series of nutrients in high concentrations. The seeds are easy to use as an ingredient because they have a neutral taste. Among other things, the seeds contain high levels of healthy, polyunsaturated omega*3 fatty acid.
In addition Chia contains:

Chia Seeds (salvia hispanica L) were cultivated in South and Central America for over ***0 years. Until around **0 years ago they were part of the staple diet of the Aztecs and Indians, consumed in similar quantities as maize and beans.

After the arrival of the Spanish, chia seeds vanished almost completely because the Indians not only used chia as a staple food in their diet but also used the seeds for religious ceremonies. In an attempt to eradicate the Indians’ culture the Spanish simply destroyed their chia fields.

Fortunately, a few plants survived in many areas and chia seeds were then rediscovered during the nineties. At that time particular difficulties were being experienced with wheat in the area as a result of the failure of harvests. A group of researchers decided to look for new crops for cultivation and they came across chia seeds which had almost completely disappeared.

When they looked further into this rediscovered food, the researchers found that chia seeds were in fact a food with almost perfect composition.
