It is also known as Palm Acid Oil (PAO) or Palm Oil Mill Effluent(POME). POME is a waste water / sludge arising at a palm oil mill during the palm oil production process. This waste water is released to a system of ponds.

Release to POME ponds:

  • POME is usually released to a system of ponds to remove solids, oil and grease before discharging the water into waterways

  • Oil settles on top of the pond and is can be extracted (skimmed off)

  • After skimming off the oil from the pond, the oil is decanted to further reduce the water content. Decanting may take place at the PoO (the oil mill) or at a separate location.
