Physical and chemical properties:
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has stable chemical properties, non-toxic harmless and
non-pollution, non-explosive. Polyvinyl alcohol is soluble in organic solvents
containing hydroxyl, such as glycerol, glyoxal, phenol, etc. Polyvinyl alcohol
hydroxyl in similar to alcohols, reaction with sodium to release hydrogen; reaction
with sodium hydroxide to generate molecular compounds, it can also occur
esteriication, etherification and hydroformylation reaction.
Polyvinyl alcohol is soluble in water, it is a soluble high molecular compound, its
disslution rate is a little different due to the different degree of polymerization,
alcoholysis and the temperature. Heated to ******0 ℃ , its nature almost unchanged,
the colour turns to yellow, the color comes darker if heating at **0 ℃ for a long time,
while at **0 ℃ will occur intermolecular dehydration, drop water-solubility and
above **0 ℃ intramolecular dehydration, lose weight; close to **0 ℃, it will broken
down into water, acetic acid, acetaldehyde, crotonaldehyde. Polyvinyl alcohol is
insoluble in Inorganic acid such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid solution.

7) Paper sizing agent ： The main application of polyvinyl alcohol in paper
processing is sizing agent in paper surface, adhesives of pigment, pulping
additives, polyvinyl alcohol has better adhesion and film-forming than casein or
starch. The paper with the polyvinyl alcohol sizing can be improved in its print
adapatability, smoothness, abrasion resistance, folding strength, oil resistance,
chemical resistance. The advantages of polyvinyl alcohol as paper sizing agent
as bellow:
a) the adhesive of polyvinyl alcohol is about 3or 4 times more than casein and
starch（b）the whiteness and the gloss of the coated paper is better；（c）print gloss
better，bright color；（d） the paper is lighter；（e）coated paper no curly；
（f）easy to use, hard to go bad；（g）better water-proof than casein or starch if
added polyvinyl alcohol powder together with pulp in pulping ,
papermaking .The paper with high strength fit for special purpose.
8) Adhesives：polyvinyl alcohol has strong adhesion to cellulose materials( paper,
cloth, wood)，due to its stable quality，difficult to go bad properties, polyvinyl
alcohol can replace starch, animal glue arabic gum, dextrin to produce all kinds
of adesives；fully hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol is better than partial hydrolyzed
polyvinyl in damp proof，partial polyvinyl alcohol soluble in water easily, which
has good bonding strength, be widely used in making adhesives sticker,
rewetting adhesive and also in craft paper, stamp, label, etc. Polyvinyl alcohol
can be paperboard laminate adhesives, corrugated board adhesives, office glue；
polyvinyl alcohol can also be adhesives of pure iron grain, thermal change
resister、Integrated circuit substrates、Integrated circuit packaging and ceramic
capacitor molding；Poly (vinyl alcohol) modified urea-formaldehyde resin can be
laminate board adhesive and artificial board adhesives；Polyvinyl alcohol size
can be paint adhesives for constructions.
9) Paint and Coatings ： polyvinyl alcohol condensation with formaldehyde water
resistance Polyvinyl formaldehyde polymer compounds Under the hydrochloric
acid catalysis，which used for interior and exterior construction walls。Polyvinyl
alcohol paint and coatings has weather resistance, water proof, no swell met
water, no embrittlement, non-toxic, insipidity, low cost, etc.
*0) Emulgator and dispersing agent：polyvinyl alcohol has good surface activity，
which can be used in vinyl acetate, Styrene emulsion polymerization emulsifier ，
improve the emulsion water resistance. It can be used as dispersion agent to
polymerize gelatin, polyvinyl alcohol, HPMC, methyl cellulose in Polyvinyl chloride
(PVC) suspension polymerization. Polyvinyl alcohol used as dispersing agent is
classified by its alcoholysis and polymerization. In general, we use alcoholysis
(****9%) as main dispersing agent, while alcoholysis (****0%) as assist dispersing
agent.
*1) Others ： polyvinyl alcohol can be made of polyvinyl alcohol rubber material,
photographic material, temporary protective film, High frequency quenching agent,
cathode-ray tube (CRT), Oil well cementing fluid loss additive, Optical brightener,
moistre proof agent, cement motar, and soil conditioner.
5. Application Method:
Polyvinyl alcohol series can be dissolved in hot water bellow *5℃, there is a little
difference in dissolving time and dissolving temperature due to its different
polymerization, alcoholysis, alcoholysis ways. The dissolving process of polyvinyl
alcohol includes swelling process and dissolving process. Put polyvinyl alcohol into
*0℃ cold water slowly and keep stirring to make it fully swell in order to let it
disperse , to make volatile materials overflow, dont dissolve polyvinyl alcohol over
*0℃ water directly, in case of the polyvinyl alcohol surface form film to pack the
undissolved ones, which caused the water cant enter into it to make polyvinyl
alcohol cant fully dissolved. To rise the temperature until *5℃ slowly after its
fully swelled and keep it for two to two and a half hours until the dissolving no
longer contains small particles and then filter the dissolving onto *5 mesh size stain
steel net. Keep the stirring speed between *****0 rpm when dissolving. We can
take jacket or water bath indirect ways to warm the dissolving and also take water
vapor to warm it directly. Dont warm it on fire, in case of part overheating
decomposition. If without stirring, we can take steam blowing method in tangent
direction to dissolve it. The concentration of polyvinyl alcohol series dissolving
water is about ****5%, while the low alcoholysis dissolving is about *0%.To test
the polyvinyl alcohol if fully dissolved: take small quantity of dissolving, add 1 to 2
drops iodine solution, if show blue granularity transparent, it means the polyvinyl
alcohol isnt fully dissolved; if the blue color can be homogeneous diffusion, it
means the polyvinyl alcohol already be fully dissolved. The polyvinyl alcohol have
little bubble when dissolving, but if the concentrate is too high or the stirring speed
is too fast, it will produce some bubble, we can add some defoamer,
The dosage is 0.*1 to 0.*5% (based on PVA) of octanol, tributyl phosphate, or 0.2 to
0.5% (based on PVA) of organic silicone emulsion.
6. Safety Caution
Polyvinyl alcohol is non-toxic, combustible polymer, the mixture of the dust
formed by polyvinyl alcohol during machining or processing with air is explosive,
The explosive force is amount to class 1.0 explosion hazard, the explosion limit is
*5g/cm3, The static dust ignition is **0℃,while the dynamics of dust ignition is
**0℃, Minimum ignition energy is **0mJ, maximum explosion pressure is
0.*2MPa;The polyvinyl alcohol remains a little volatiles, such as carbinol, methyl
acetate, etc., there are CO, formaldehyde, acetic acid steam spreading in the air if the
temperature is too high. We must take dustproof measures during machining of
polyvinyl alcohol, forbid to use open flame, use equipment conform to the
requirements of the blast
7. Storage, Package and Transportation
Polyvinyl alcohol should be stored in close, ventilation, shady and cool warehouse,
which fire proof, rain proof, wet proof, the temperature bellow *5℃, no sunlight,
keep away from heating equipment, dont store it with other chemicals in case of
adsorption to go bad, polyvinyl alcohol packed in polywoven bags or craft bags, *0
or *5 kg net bag. The polyvinyl alcohol is transported by truck with sail, rain proof,
wet proof, and sunlight resistance, be careful to break the package when carrying it,
Due to pva combustible dust with explosion danger, transportation vehicles and
wagons and loading and unloading places should be flameproof explosion-proof
measures accordingly。Polyvinyl alcohol solution storage should pay attention to rust
corrosion.
