Uses:

Potassium is used in the manufacture of various types of Glass, Explosive-Blasting powder. Slurry, Dynamics, Matches, Fertilizers, Heat Treatment & Heat transfer salts and Leather processing Industries. Potassium nitrate is also one of the three components of black powder, along with powdered charcoal (substantially carbon) and sulfur, where it acts as an oxidizer. Potassium nitrate is an efficient oxidizer, which produces a lilac-colored flame upon burning due to the presence of potassium. It is therefore used in amateur rocket propellants and in several fireworks such as smoke bombs, made with a mixture of sucrose and potassium nitrate. It is also added to pre-rolled cigarettes to maintain an even burn of the tobacco. Potassium nitrate was used to ensure complete combustion of paper cartridges for cap and ball revolvers, as a treatment agent for the paper used to make the cartridges.

In the process of food preservation, potassium nitrate has been a common ingredient of salted meat since the Middle Ages.

Potassium nitrate is the main component (usually about *8%) of tree stump remover, as it accelerates the natural decomposition of the stump. It is also commonly used in the heat treatment of metals as a solvent in the post-wash. The oxidizing, water solubility and low cost make it an ideal short-term rust inhibitor.

Potassium nitrate can be found in some toothpastes for sensitive teeth. It successfully combats high blood pressure and was once used as a hypotensive.

KNO3 *- **1.1 *- ********1

DEFINITION
Potassium nitrate contains not less than *9.0 per cent and not more than the equivalent of **1.0 per cent of KNO3, calculated with reference to the dried substance.

CHARACTERS
A white, crystalline powder or colourless crystals, freely soluble in water, very soluble in boiling water, practically insoluble in alcohol.

IDENTIFICATION
A. It gives the reaction of nitrates.
B. Solution S (see Tests) gives the reactions of potassium.

TESTS
Solution S
Dissolve *0.0 g in carbon dioxide-free water prepared from distilled water and dilute to **0 ml with the same solvent.
Appearance of solution
Solution S is clear and colourless.
Acidity or alkalinity
To *0 ml of solution S add 0.*5 ml of bromothymol blue solution. Not more than 0.5 ml of 0.*1 M hydrochloric acid or 0.*1 M sodium hydroxide is required to change the colour of the indicator.
Reducible substances
To *0 ml of solution S, add 0.5 ml of dilute sulphuric acid and 2 ml of zinc iodide  and starch solution. The solution does not become blue within 2 min.
Chlorides
If intended for ophthalmic use, it complies with the test for chlorides. Dissolve 2.5 g in water and dilute to *5 ml with the same solvent. The solution complies with the limit test for chlorides (*0 ppm).
Sulphates
Dilute *0 ml of solution S to *5 ml with distilled water. The solution complies with the limit test for sulphates (**0 ppm).
Ammonium
1 ml of solution S complies with the limit test (A) for ammonium (**0 ppm). If intended for ophthalmic use, not more than *0 ppm of ammonium.
Calcium
Dilute *0 ml of solution S to *5 ml with distilled water. The solution complies with the limit test for calcium (**0 ppm). If intended for ophthalmic use, not more than *0 ppm of calcium.
Iron
Dilute 5 ml of solution S to *0 ml with water. The solution complies with the limit test for iron (*0 ppm). If intended for ophthalmic use, not more than *0 ppm of iron.

Not more than 0.5 per cent determined on 1.**0 g by drying in an oven at **0°C to **5°C.

Potassium Nitrate USP

Potassium Nitrate
KNO3 **1.*0
Potassium nitrate.
Potassium nitrate [********1].

Potassium Nitrate contains not less than *9.0 percent and not more than **0.5 percent of KNO3.

Identification— A solution of it responds to the tests for Potassium and for Nitrate.
Chloride— A ***-mg portion of it shows no more chloride than corresponds to 0.*1 mL of 0.**0 N hydrochloric acid (0.*3%).
Sulfate— Dissolve **0 mg of Potassium Nitrate in *0 mL of water, add *5 mL of 6 N hydrochloric acid, and evaporate to dryness on a steam bath. To the residue so obtained add 7 mL of 6 N hydrochloric acid, and evaporate to dryness on a steam bath. Dissolve the residue so obtained in about *5 mL of water and, if necessary, neutralize with hydrochloric acid using litmus paper indicator. Filter, if necessary, to obtain a clear test solution. This test solution shows no more sulfate than corresponds to 0.*0 mL of 0.**0 N sulfuric acid (0.1%).
