Introduction of SVC

Traditional dynamic reactive power compensation device is the synchronous con-denser. It is designed to produce reactive power of the synchronous motor, in the case of over excitation or under excitation; it can make different values of capaci-tive or inductive reactive power. In the decades Since the ***0s, the synchronous condenser used to play a major role in the reactive power control of the power system.

However, as it is a rotary motor, the loss and the noise are large, the op-eration and maintenance is complex, and the response time is slow, so in many cases, it can’t adapt to controlling the reactive power quickly.
Therefore, since the ***0s, synchronous condenser has began to be replaced by static type reactive power compensation device, and at present some countries haven’t already used synchronous condensers any more. 

Working principle of STATCOM

  STATCOM(static synchronous compensator)is the most advanced reactive compensation installation, applicable for improving grid stability, increasing power transmission ability, removing reactive power impulse,filtering harmonic and balancing three-phase voltage. By adjusting amplitude and phase of output voltage at inverter AC side, it can absorb or give out designated reactive power, realizing quick and dynamic regulation of reactive power.In view of VSC(voltage source converter)structure, it can quickly realize reactive compensation. Without capacitor and inductance parts of big capacity, it can transfer voltage at DC side into output voltage which is the same with grid on frequency with large-frequency power electronics(IGBT) rather than large-capacity capacitive and inductive components so that reactive power transfer and base wave reactive power compensation are realized. This is how to change the reactive energy and compensate fundamental harmonic. Additionally, STATCOM works as a controlled harmonic source, and can do harmonic compensation according to system requirement.
