Colostrum is one of the nature’s immune nutrient foods. It is a form of pre-milk fluid produced by the mammary glands of the cows during the first *8 hours after giving birth. It is thick, sticky and yellow in colour. Colostrum contains high levels of carbohydrates, protein, and antibodies, and low levels of fat. It delivers its nutrients in a very concentrated low-volume form as the newborns have very small digestive systems. Colostrum has large numbers of antibodies called “secretory immunoglobulins” that help protect the mucous membranes in the throat, lungs and intestines of the newborns. Leukocytes are also present in colostrums, which protect the newborns from harmful viruses and bacteria. Supplementation of colostrum aids establishing beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract.
