17-4PH alloy is a precipitation of copper, niobium / columbium constituted hardening martensitic stainless steel. This level has high strength, degree (up to 300º C / 572º F) and anti-corrosion properties. After heat treatment, the mechanical properties of the product more perfect, can reach up to 1100-1300 mpa (160-190 ksi) of compressive strength. This level can not be used above 300º C (572º F) or under very low temperatures, its atmosphere and dilute acid or salt has good corrosion resistance, corrosion resistance and its 304 and 430 the same.



17-4 Precipitation Hardening also known as Type 630 is a chromium-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel used for applications requiring high strength and a moderate level of corrosion resistance. High strength is maintained to approximately 600 degrees Fahrenheit (316 degrees Celsius).





General PropertiesAlloy 17-4 PH is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel with Cu and Nb/Cb additions. The grade combines high strength, hardness (up to 572°F / 300°C), and corrosion resistance.

Mechanical properties can be optimized with heat treatment. Very high yield strength up to 1100-1300 MPa (160-190 ksi) can be achieved.

The grade should not be used at temperatures above 572°F (300°C) or at very low temperatures. It has adequate resistance to atmospheric corrosion or in diluted acids or salts where its corrosion resistance is equivalent to Alloy 304 or 430.

Hot forming

Hot forming should be treated in a certain temperature range, such as 950-1200ºC (1742-2192ºF).

The whole heat treatment includes solid annealing, cooling( lower than 25ºC) and curing.

Cutting

welding:17-4 PH alloy can be welded the following:. SMAW, GTAW, PAW and GMAW preliminary test (to check for cracks and weld metal toughness), the SAW welding can be carried out. Because ferrite solidification, reduces the likelihood of weld metal hot cracking and thermal deterioration. In general, does not require preheating, intermediate temperature should be controlled at 120 ° C (248 ° F). After full heat treatment (solution annealing + hardened), the toughness will increase. Martensitic structure due to its own characteristics, the weld metal oxygen content is low to keep the good toughness and ductility. In order to avoid cold cracking, hydrogen intervention should be avoided. 17-4 PH alloy can be filled with the same type of metal (e.g., E 630 (AWS A5.4)? ER 630 (AWS A5.9) welding. If welding without taking into account the mechanical properties of 17-4PH to be austenitic filler metal, then there is no need for heat treatment.

Corrosion Resistance
17-4 PH alloy corrosion resistance is superior to any other standard hardenable stainless steel. In most cases, its corrosion resistance is as much as 304. If there exists the risk of stress corrosion cracking, high curing temperature must be higher than 550℃.( The best temperature is 590℃. As for Chloride medium, the best tempering temperature is from 550 ℃ to 1022℃. As for H2S medium the best tempering temperature is from 590 ℃to 1094 ℃. The alloy in the static salty water easily suffers from polluting corrosion orcracking corrosion.
Machinability
We can treating the 17-4 PH alloy under hardening state by way of solution treatment or quenching water on mechanical processing. The material hardness changes according to the processing condition . We usually use high speed cutting tool or carbide tool after lubrication. to process. If the customer is very strict with tolerance, we should also consider the changes of the size during heat treatment.
Welding
Welding measures available : SMAW, GTAW, PAW and GMAW.After a preliminary test (check the presence of cracks and the toughness of weld metal), we can use SAW welding.As a result of the ferrite curing, it reduces the possibility of a weld metal cracking and thermal metamorphism. Generally speaking, we do not need to preheat. The temperature should be controlled at120°C (248°F).After complete heat treatment (solid annealing + quench hardening), toughness increases. Due to its martensitic structure characteristics, low oxygen content in the weld metal keep itself good toughness andductility. In order to avoid cold crack, please try to avoid the involvement of hydrogen.
