Toraja woven fabric does have a very high position in the Toraja culture. Woven fabric in addition play an important role in many traditional ceremonies, also serves as a symbol of prosperity and glory to the owners. In ancient times only certain people were able to have these fabrics such as nobility or the people who classified as  economically capable. To be able to have these fabrics, they have to exchange it with farm animals such as buffalo, which is economically have a very high value.

In the past, bundle of cloth were used to pay taxes and as a mark of achievement of peace between aristocratic groups  warring.

Some of the woven fabric-making process Toraja, from threads until fabric. Threads spun the form of fibers. These fibers consist of two types exist in the form of cotton. There is the form of pineapple fibers, but the fiber of the pineapple is already scarce, this is because it is hard to find pineapple fiber now. So the dominant used today is cotton fiber.

Toraja woven fabric manufacturing process is very complicated because they use traditional loom ( not a machine ), all processes are done traditionally and manual. so if we want to book weaves here,  it will takes about two months working for a fabric.

Artisans in village Toraja still produce  woven, good for everyday clothing, ceremonial purposes or to sell.

Toraja woven fabric can be made and sewn to serve as everyday clothing or decorating interior and exterior home
