Valine

It is named after the plant valerian. In sickle-cell disease, valine substitutes for the hydrophilic amino acid glutamic acid in hemoglobin.

Tryptophan

It is encoded in the standard genetic code as the codon UGG. Only the L-stereoisomer of tryptophan is used in structural or enzyme proteins.

Threonine

The threonine residue is susceptible to numerous posttranslational modifications. The hydroxy side-chain can undergo O-linked glycosylation.

Phenylalanine

L-Phenylalanine is biologically converted into L-tyrosine, another one of the DNA-encoded amino acids.

Methionine

This essential amino acid is classified as nonpolar. This amino-acid is coded by the codon AUG, also known as the initiation codon.

Lysine

Lysine is a base, as are arginine and histidine. The -amino group often participates in hydrogen bonding and as a general base in catalysis.

Leucine

Leucine is an essential amino acid, meaning that the human body cannot synthesize it, and it therefore must be ingested.

Isoleucine

It is an essential amino acid, which means that humans cannot synthesize it, so it must be ingested.
