Decription
The cold worked tool steel D2 is a high carbon, high Chromium alloy steel. It is with high
dimensional stability in heat treatment. A duplex microstructure with coarse complex
carbides provide a steel with high wear resistance good toughness. It is suitable to
processing stock thickness up to 3mm.
Main Application
All kinds of scissor, inlay blade and woodworking blade. High duty cutting tools (dies and
punches), long run form rolls, tube mill rolls, deep drawing tools for sheet and strip, shear
blades, circular shears, thread rolling dies, small moulds for plastic industries and
pressing tools for ceramic industries. Cold heading mould, deep drawn mould and impact
extrusion moulds.

Hardening
Hardening should be done a neutral salt bath, fluidized bed or other controlled
atmosphere furnaces. Preheat gradually to 300 to 800 ℃ then rise to 980-1020 ℃,
followed by air cooling. It is essential to soak at hardening temperature for 10-20 minutes.
Obtainable hardness 63-65 HRC.
Tempering
Tempering should be carried out immediately on completion of quenching. For maximum
hardness and abrasion resistance heat to 150-250 ℃ holding at temperature 1 hour for
each 25mm section. Tempering curve given indicates typical values obtained from air
cooling from 1010 ℃. Nitriding treatment from improved retention of hardness is
recommended for certain applications.

Cooling/Quenching Notes
Forging 2000-2100° F Slow.
Heat slowly and uniformly. Do not forge
below 1700°F. Cool in vermiculite or
other insulating media.
Annealing 1545-1600° F
Cool slowly at a
rate of 25° F per
hour to 1000° F.
Protect against surface decarburization
using controlled atmosphere or by
pack-annealing.
Stress
Relieving
1020-1200° F
Cool slowly in
furnace to 930° F.
Then in air.
Stress relieve after rough machining
Preheating 1450-1500° F
Preheat time in furnace is ¾ Hr. per inch
of thickness. Heating up to temperature
as slow as possible
Hardening 1800-1900° F In air.
Temper immediately after hardening.
Allow to cool to 125-150° F before
tempering. Soak time is 15 minutes per
inch of thickness. Minimum of 30
minutes.
Tempering
Complete equalization of temperature
throughout the tool is essential for good
results. Double temper. Recommended
temperature is 400-1000° F Cold work steel D2 1.2379
