English Saddle Fitting

When fitting an English saddle to a horse, the saddle must fit properly to maintain comfort and safety. This goes beyond measurements, as the shape of a horse’s body, including its withers, shoulders, and other areas, are a big determining factor in properly fitting a saddle. The following table contains steps to fitting an English saddle to a horse. Ask someone to help when fitting for a saddle.

• Put the saddle on the horse, leaving the saddle pad off for the time being
• Tighten the girth so that it is snug
• Have a helper sit in the saddle with feet in the stirrups
• With the hand flat, slide the fingers underneath the pommel at the withers; three fingers should fit comfortably between the withers and the arch below the pommel.
• Have the helper lift the horse’s left foreleg, pulling it forward while the shopper makes sure the saddle doesn’t impede shoulder movement by placing their fingers between the top of the shoulder blade and pommel; repeat for the right side
• Standing behind the horse, look through the saddle; a tunnel of light should be visible, otherwise the saddle is too snug.
• Make sure the saddle isn’t too long for the horse; the seat panel should not extend past the horse’s back to rest on the loin, if this is the case, it is too long
