Purple Heart heartwood is dull grey brown when the wood is freshly cut but exposed to air, it changes to a strikingly deep purple. It is a dense wood and very stiff which makes it perfect for neck laminates. It is used extensively with maple in laminated necks to add more stiffness and low articulation. It looks very nice as a contrast with light colored woods.
