Description

A membrane bioreactor (MBR) is a compact-built purification system combining the biological degradation step with a membrane separation step, eliminating the need of a clarification tank. The influent is fed into the aerated bioreactor where the organic components are oxidized by the activated sludge. The aqueous activated sludge solution then passes through a micro or ultra filtration membrane filtration unit, separating the water from the sludge. The biomass (activated sludge) then recirculating back to the bioreactor, while the permeate is discharged as particle-free effluent. The biomass concentration inside the MBR and the ratio of specific micro-organism can be controlled to achieve the efficiency of the biological processes. Its high performance solid liquid separation produces a MF/UF quality water suitable for reuse applications as for flushing toilets; garden and agriculture irrigations; landscape or golf course irrigation. In addition, it provides a barrier to certain chlorine resistant pathogens such as Crytospaoridium and Giardia. It is specially good for intermediate water processing.
