A Rash guard is a tight fitting and expandable shirt used by surfers to protect them from the harmful rays of the sun and from the incessent rubbing of their chest and stomach over the sticky wax used for traction on the deck of their surfboards. Rash guards are made of Lycra which is light and flexible, making them perfect for surfing. Rash guards are also used as an undergarment when wearing a wetsuit to eliminate rubbing or chafing. Rash guards can come in short or long sleeve and are offered in any array of colors. They were originally used as contest jerseys in the mid-eighties and then quickly became mainstream.
