PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Castilla Blend is the major export of Ecopetrol. A few years ago, its main component was a marginal hydrocarbon was used for asphalt, or as a child in other mixtures. This is the story of a profitable transformation.

There was once a pipeline called OCENSA by which light crude is transported. The proper utilization of the installed capacity of Ecopetrol, coupled with a precise combination (blending) of oil and diluent, allowed to use the same pipeline to transport heavy crude. Castilla Blend: And thanks to that process the flagship product of the company\'s exports grew.

Some specialists use a simile to differentiate hydrocarbons according to their gravity and viscosity. Lighter compared with water or milk, and heavier with caramel. The caramel is consumed with spoon and milk with straw. What was achieved was that the caramel Ecopetrol could be consumed with straw

Blend: It is the trade name
of a crude product which, as such, does not exist
naturally but results
mixing several types of crudes.
(Glossary of PDVSA oil).
.

Pick up the story of the pipeline. It was part of the infrastructure of a country that had several good years of light crude. It was conceived, designed and built to carry this type of oil, leaves for foreign markets, partly for domestic consumption and refining.

In the country itself there were heavy crudes. But they were a marginal input. Were used as raw material for asphalt. Or as a minor element in mixtures. One day, conditions changed. Technological advances enabled increased productivity of heavy. Options that made cleaner and consolidated as an alternative to the progressive decline of the reserves of light were developed. They began to gain importance not only in Colombia but in the world.

And there was, of course, the pipeline\'s history.  Designed and used to transport "milk." he would continue to meet
that function, because there were still light crude oil reserves, but also had to stick a "caramel"

Sounds hard as told. And it seemed much harder in reality. But it is exactly the challenge faced Ecopetrol from ***3, when the decision to expand production Castilla Crude *0 thousand barrels per day (kbpd) to *0 thousand barrels took.

A fundamental characteristic of hydrocarbons is their gravity, which is measured by degrees API. The extra heavy are *0 degrees or less, heavy *0 to *2.3, median of *2.3 to *1.1 and thereafter speaks of light. Castilla is *2 degrees API and another that was near and that there was going to enter the dance, Chichimene, 8 to *0 degrees API. Moving through the pipeline network involves the use of a diluent (naphtha).

Until then, Castilla Crude volumes than were handled **0 thousand barrels daily-, combined with other qualities to create the mix Basque, export.

There was no clarity about the fate that would give *0 billion additional barrels initially projected, but, whatever happened to them, it would be necessary to dilute.

Also had to move to Plant of  Covenas from where part of Colombia\'s oil exports. For that, OCENSA pipeline is used, by which also passes what is extracted from Cusiana, road to the refinery.

The term used in the hydrocarbon industry to define a product that charges move through the pipeline is "bumpy". OCENSA already had two bumps: Mix Basque and Cusiana.
