Description

International trade in fresh cassava roots is mostly confined to transactions between neighboring countries and is not usually recorded in the official statistics. Its expansion has been hampered by the bulkiness and perishes ability of the roots, which make them a risky product to market and an inconvenient and expensive food for the urban dweller. However, in recent years the increase in some developed countries of populations originating from Latin America and the Caribbean and from Africa has given rise to an intensification of fresh cassava trade from those regions to the North America and Europe. These markets exist owing to the discovery of paraffin coating process, or less frequently used C*2 filled plastic bag process, that extends the shelf life of fresh cassava roots. Therefore, trade in fresh cassava roots, though still very limited, could emerge as a growth market in the future, although this will require innovative handling methods to ensure that quality roots reach their destination.
Cassava is Gods gift to the tropics because it can grow in poor soil with inadequate rainfall. The starchy roots of cassava are major source of food for more than **0 million people all over the world.  Nigeria is the world largest producer of cassava. We produce over *1 million metric tones per annum and we are followed by Brazil, Thailand, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo) and Indonesia. Thailand does the largest global business in cassava because it is not part of their food security. They export over $*0 billion worth of cassava products annually. Nigeria tried to expand the local cassava business through the Cassava Empowerment Fund but to no avail. Cassava is produced all over the country but more abundantly in all the Southern and Middle Belt States of Nigeria and is widely consumed as garri and fufu. Therefore, Paulosko farm Nig. Ltd takes cassava production very seriously and pushes it proactively to saturate the Nigeria market within one year. We also propose that they expand their production after one year and adopt a formidable marketing strategy that will involve export to local and international markets.
Garri starch are produced from cassava tubers and is the commonest staple food in Nigeria consumed by over **0 million people. We consume about 7.7 million metric tons of garri per year and it comes to about *0.7 million tons of our cassava production. Our actual demand for garri is *2 million tons but we cannot accomplish that because of the stress and drudgery involved in the traditional production. A major constraint to  the continued expansion of the starch market is the high level of protection characterizing  international markets, as many countries protect their domestic starch industries.
