How to make barium carbonate?
Barium carbonate is made commercially from barium sulfide either by treatment withsodium carbonate at *0 to *0 °C (soda ash method) or by passing carbon dioxide at *0 to *0 °C. In the soda ash process, solid or dissolved sodium carbonate is added to barium sulfide solution, and the barium carbonate precipitate is filtered, washed and dried. In the barium carbonate molecule, two oxygen atoms gain one electron each from Ba atom.
Applications
Barite ore is crushed, milled, mixed with petroleum coke,*2 and fed into one of two
countercurrent, direct-fired rotary kilns*3 operating at a temperature of approximately ********0°C (~********0 °F) where it reacts with the coke (elemental carbon) in a ratio of 5:4 (BaSO4 : C) to produce water-soluble barium sulfide (BaS)
